Its Role & Relevance in the Research & Implementation Process
Pre-congress Workshop: International Medical Congress of the Sri Lanka Medical Association; 132nd Anniversary
A workshop titled “Patient and Public, Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in Health and Social Care: Its Role and Relevance in the Research and Implementation Process”, was held on the 22nd of July 2019 at the Clinical Medicine, Academic & Research Centre (ClinMARC) housed at the National Hospital of Sri Lanka (NHSL). It was conducted by the Institute for Research & Development in Health & Social Care (IRD) as part of the pre-congress workshop series organized by the Sri Lanka Medical Association (SLMA) for its 132nd Anniversary, International Medical Congress. This is the 2nd consecutive SLMA pre-congress workshop conducted by the IRD.
The main goal of the workshop was to introduce researchers, and other parties interested in the development of the research process within the nation, to the role and relevance of Patient and Public Involvement and Engagement (PPIE) in the research and implementation process in Sri Lanka. In addition to this, the workshop served to further the first PPIE pre-congress workshop conducted by the IRD on the 25th of July 2018.
Resource persons included Prof. Diyanath Samarasinghe, Dr. Buddhika Fernando, Ms. Manouri Wimalasekera, Dr. Kaushalya Jayaweera, Dr. Duminda Guruge, Dr. Asiri Hewamalage, Ms. Krishani Jayasinghe and lay community resource persons; who covered topics vital in communicating the role and relevance of PPIE in Sri Lanka, the considerations to be made when incorporating it, the embedding of PPIE in the research and implementation process, potential applications and future activities in establishing PPIE in Sri Lanka.
