On August 2, 2024, the Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD) held a stakeholder engagement event titled “No Development Without Research” at The Albatross Water’s Edge, Battaramulla. The event emphasized the crucial role of research in Sri Lanka’s development, with representatives from all major political parties invited to attend.
The event’s highlight was the unveiling of the Gaveshana Special Issue, a tri-lingual research magazine featuring contributions from both local and expatriate Sri Lankan professionals. This magazine celebrates the innovative work of local inventors, reinforcing the nation’s commitment to advancing research and development.
Prominent figures in the research field, including Prof. Athula Sumathipala, Prof. Ranjith Senarathne, Prof. Ajith De Alwis, Dr. Sunil de Alwis, and Dr. Buddhika Fernando, addressed the attendees. The session concluded with a comments and discussion segment, allowing invitees to share their insights and perspectives on the topics discussed.
The IRD, a 27-year-old academic research institution, is dedicated to fostering a robust research culture in Sri Lanka. The institute aims to bridge the gap between high-impact research and policy implementation, promoting multidisciplinary studies and strategic partnerships to address societal issues and drive sustainable development. In recognition of its outstanding international collaboration and leadership in advancing science and technology, the National Science Foundation honored the IRD in 2018.
The event was a testament to the IRD’s commitment to promoting research as a cornerstone of national development, providing a platform for meaningful dialogue between researchers, policymakers, and the broader community.
