Prof. Athula Sumathipala, Director of the Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD), recently shared his insights on the current dengue risk in Sri Lanka and the public’s responsibility in addressing it during TV Derana’s ‘Aluth Parliamenthuwa’ program, broadcast on July 15. Highlighting that Sri Lanka is a nation that developed a vaccine for rabies as early as 1920, he emphasized the need to face current crises collectively, drawing inspiration from how the country successfully overcame massive health challenges in the past.
Pointing out recent data which indicates that the majority of current dengue-related deaths are among women, Prof. Sumathipala explained the importance of seeking immediate medical advice upon noticing any symptoms, regardless of busy schedules and daily household chores. The discussion further highlighted that controlling the spread of dengue cannot be achieved by the health sector alone; the direct involvement and responsible action of the general public are absolutely essential.
