A Proud Moment for Sri Lanka

Professor Athula Sumathipala has assumed office as the President of the International Society for Twin Studies (ISTS) for the 2026–2027 term, effective today, 1 January 2026. He was the Secretary General from 2024 to 2025. Following the successful conclusion of the 20th Congress of the International Society for Twin Studies and the 8th World Congress on Twin Pregnancy, held in Colombo, Sri Lanka, from 10–12 August 2025.
Hosted by the Institute for Research and Development in Health and Social Care (IRD) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Twin Registry (SLTR), this landmark event brought together leading scientists, clinicians, and public health experts from more than 30 countries, reinforcing its global significance.
Professor Sumathipala’s appointment reflects over two decades of pioneering contributions to twin and population-based research. His presidency marks a proud milestone for Sri Lanka, highlighting the nation’s growing impact in global health research and its strengthening role in international scientific collaboration.
